(There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.)
As I painted this artwork, I felt guided by the piece itself. Initially, I covered the canvas with colors I desired. Gradually, the layered and cracked human figure took shape. However, the symbolic rectangular pattern opening up in the upper right corner represented the sunlight I intuitively wanted to emerge. Interestingly, I later discovered sunlight entering through my window in daily life, reflecting on the wall in a way that coincided with the imagery in this painting. In the midst of winter, I yearned for the warmth brought by sunlight. The image of this sunlight also symbolizes a passage and pathway, guiding us through hardships, ultimately leading to the discovery of light and hope.
The title of the artwork, "There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in," comes from the lyrics of a song by Canadian poet and singer Leonard Cohen. I am pleased to find a poem that resonates so deeply and suits the symbolism of this painting, making it the title for this piece.
